How did the project better utilize existing assets to increase safety, improve reliability, and/or reduce congestion within the transportation system to benefit users?
Clearing streets of debris and restoring traffic was the first and most pressing need. KYTC was uniquely equipped for that work in personnel and equipment. Within days, hundreds of volunteers from across the nation were pouring into Mayfield with materials and personnel. KYTC then spent $7.5 million to purchase 200 travel trailers. Of those, 120 were deployed for use by families comprising 450 individuals. Due to the number of houses and apartment units wiped out by the tornado, many of the families would have had to move to neighboring towns to find rental properties.
