What were the ultimate benefits to system users?
The 5th Street Pedestrian Bridge is now an active pedestrian crossing over the Savannah River, providing an attractive and viable option to motorized transportation for those strolling on foot, jogging or exercising. It is also an active hub of community activity, with several community arts events and festivals scheduled for the bridge. Numerous benches with shading, water fountains for people and companion animals, and substantial lighting for safety and aesthetic enhancement are all part of the project. The new bridge deck was colorfully and attractively painted to include important dates in the bridge’s history.
How did the project focus on alternative modes of transportation or improve multi-modal access?
The project is completely focused on pedestrians, improving multi-modal access by providing an attractive and viable option for those strolling on foot, jogging or exercising. Local residents whose homes or businesses are on opposite sides of the Savannah River can now easily and leisurely cross the river via this well-appointed all-pedestrian bridge, easily accessing their homes, offices and other places of business without having to drive their cars.
