What were the ultimate benefits to system users?
For those that stayed on the island during the storm, without the bridge they had no drivable access off the island to get supplies, seek medical attention etc., and vice versa, first responders, supply deliveries, etc had no drivable access to reach those in need. Since repairs were made many residents have returned home, or are able to make repairs on their homes, because they can drive back and forth to the islands. Businesses that fared well are open, and patrons from all over have visited Sanibel to support them. And, because the bridge was opened so quickly, the Lee County School District was able to get contractors and engineers into the school, and it reopened to faculty and students on February 8, 2023. The Emergency Restoration to the Sanibel Causeway allowed the islands of Sanibel and Captiva to continue to have life and promote the ongoing redevelopment of the island communities.
How did the project focus on alternative modes of transportation or improve multi-modal access?
Following Hurricane Ian, the only access to Sanibel and Captiva Islands was by helicopter, boat, or barge. With the temporary restoration, FDOT restored vehicular access to the islands allowing residents, business owners, and contractors free and expedited access to the islands. Also, getting repairs complete to this main bridge allowed additional recovery efforts to start on other damaged infrastructure on the island, helping to restore the community to some sense of normalcy.
