What were the ultimate benefits to system users?
On average, every year there are 14 to 16 auto-pedestrian fatalities along I-35 through Austin. 92% of these fatalities occur at night. In 2017, 80% of pedestrian fatalities on I-35 involved individuals experiencing homelessness. It is estimated that the cost of these fatalities is approximately $6.5 million every year. These are costs in user delay, emergency services, and system repairs. But the best means to prevent pedestrian fatalities involving individuals experiencing homelessness is to relocate them to safe, dignified housing.
Pedestrian fatalities have been reduced by 89% with the Be Safe Be Seen campaign and new pedestrian barrier designed to deter pedestrians from crossing. While this project concentrates on pedestrian safety, ultimately --- all system users benefit.
How did the project focus on alternative modes of transportation or improve multi-modal access?
While this project did not focus on alternative modes of transportation, it did focus on alternative approaches to solving a problem --- and transit was included in the solution. CapMetro, Austin’s transit provider is a Mobility35 IAH coalition partner.
