Project Description
The Manahawkin Bay Bridges are a vital connector for Stafford Township and Long Beach Island. While essential to the towns' economies, more importantly, the causeway also serves as the hurricane evacuation route that allows a clear path to safety. When the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) determined that the steel superstructure was failing, it began work on an $87 million project to replace it. Working in close collaboration with its partners, NJDOT replaced the outdated structure with a new steel structure. While under construction, NJDOT kept in mind sensitive environmental areas to ensure operations ran smoothly while not disturbing habitats or wildlife The result was a set of newly rehabilitated bridges that increase safety and provide a more efficient link between these beach towns.
